Black Vigil review: the slot where the line count is the first decision

Nocturn Play's noir line slot looks classic until the Warden lands. We break down its lines, its multiplying wilds and the three-stage Manhunt, and how it feels on Sweep Coins.

Black Vigil is a 5-reel, 3-row line slot from Nocturn Play with a gothic noir theme, where you choose 10, 20 or 30 paylines and a hooded vigilante called the Warden multiplies every line he touches. Its top win is 5,000× the bet.

Short answer: A familiar 5×3 frame with more going on than it first shows. Warden wilds carry ×2, ×3 or ×5 and multiply together up to ×25 per line, a respin called the Signal can rescue dead spins, and The Manhunt runs three free spin stages at ×1, ×2 and ×3. Max win 5,000× the bet; the bonus buy costs 100× the bet. Verdict: a good pick for line-slot fans who want multipliers without learning a new grid.

The first decision: 10, 20 or 30 lines

Most modern slots hide this choice. Black Vigil puts it on the bar. The stake is set per line, so the total bet is the bet per line times the number of active lines. On Sweep Coins, that looks like this:

Cost per spin at 0.01 SC per line
LinesCost per spinWhat changes
100.10 SCCheaper spins, wins land less often
20 (default)0.20 SCThe middle setting
300.30 SCThree times the 10-line cost, more paths for a combination

According to Nocturn Play's own walkthrough, the game is tuned so no line count is a better deal than another over time. So this isn't a strategy lever. It is a pace lever: how often you want the screen to light up, and what you're willing to pay per spin for that.

How Black Vigil plays

Three or more matching symbols on a line, starting from the leftmost reel, pay. The cast is small and comic-book flavoured: a grappling hook, a police radio and an armoured gauntlet at the bottom, then Inspector Voss, and The Dealer (top hat, half mask) at the top of the paytable. A raven in a leather coat watches from a rooftop and reacts to what happens. The palette is navy, black and electric yellow, and it holds together well.

The Warden

The wild lands only on reels 2, 3 and 4. He substitutes for everything except the spotlight scatter, and he brings his own multiplier: most often ×2, sometimes ×3, more rarely ×5. Two Wardens on one line multiply each other. A ×3 and a ×5 make ×15. The ceiling is ×25 on a single line. The detail worth remembering is that a Warden counts for every line he sits on, so with 30 lines active one wild can boost several wins in the same spin. That is the real argument for playing more lines.

The Signal

After some losing spins, a searchlight beam locks the first two or three matching cells of a line and respins the rest of the reels to try to complete it. You can't trigger it or buy it. It's a quiet second chance that shortens dry spells, and on a base game this plain it does a lot of work.

The Manhunt, stage by stage

Three or more spotlights anywhere pay a prize and start the bonus. The number of spotlights sets the spins for each stage: 4 for three, 6 for four, 8 for five.

  1. The Alleys (×1). Every Warden that lands is locked by the beam until the stage ends.
  2. The Docks (×2). Wins are doubled, and the beam can drop extra locked Wardens onto the reels.
  3. The Tower (×3). Wins tripled, more dropped Wardens, and multipliers that lean higher than before.

Locked Wardens clear between stages, so each one starts fresh. Three spotlights inside a stage add a spin, up to 10 per stage. The shape is what we like here: the bonus gets stronger as it goes, rather than front-loading everything into the first spin.

Buying the bonus

The Bonus button buys The Manhunt for 100× the total bet, always with all three stages. At 0.20 SC per spin that is 20.00 SC per purchase. That's a big chunk of most Sweep Coin balances. If you'd rather let it come naturally, autoplay can stop as soon as the spotlights line up.

Max win

5,000× the bet, per the game page. On a 0.30 SC spin that ceiling is 1,500 SC; on a 3,000 GC spin it is 15,000,000 GC. Neither figure is something to plan around. It is the cap, not the expectation. The game page does not publish an RTP figure, and Nocturn Play offers Black Vigil in several RTP settings that operators choose, so check the info screen at the casino you play on.

Gold Coins or Sweep Coins?

The game is the same in both coins: same maths, same features, same 5,000× cap. A selector at the top shows both balances, and each session runs in one coin. Switching opens a twin session in the other coin, and it is refused while a round, including the Manhunt, is still running. So a bonus triggered on Sweep Coins pays Sweep Coins to the end.

Our practical take: learn the line count on Gold Coins, where there's no pressure, then move to Sweep Coins with the setting you settled on. If 30 lines at your SC stake burns through the balance faster than you'd like, drop to 10 lines rather than lowering the bet per line to a figure that makes wins feel pointless. How SC can later be redeemed depends on each casino's rules; our redemption guide explains the usual steps.

Who Black Vigil suits

It suits less well if you want constant action: base-game wins are steady rather than explosive, and the big moments live inside the Manhunt.
