Gridiron Noir review: four downs, eighty yards and a slot that keeps score

Gridiron Noir turns every win into yards. We read the scoreboard, explain the downs, show why your drive belongs to your stake, and go through Overtime to the last-second pass.

Updated October 29, 2026 · by the editorial team

Gridiron Noir is an American football slot from Nocturn Play with 6 reels, 4 rows and 4,096 ways to win, where every winning spin pushes the ball down a yard line toward a touchdown that triggers Overtime free spins. The maximum win is 5,000× the bet.

Short answer: A ways slot with a football drive on top: wins gain 5, 10, 25 or 50 yards, four downs decide whether you keep the ball, and a touchdown (or three-plus golden balls) starts Overtime with a ×1 to ×5 ladder and a last pass worth up to ×25. The drive is saved per bet level. Buy Overtime for 62× the bet. Max win 5,000×. Verdict: the best-built theme in our set, and genuinely fun if you know football.

Reading the scoreboard

Before you spin, look above and to the right of the reels. The strip on top is the field: your ball, and the end zone on the right. One panel shows down and distance, written like a broadcast: "1st & 10", "3rd & 4". Another shows yards to the end zone, starting at 80. A third holds the Overtime clock, which only wakes up during the bonus. Brutus, a bulldog quarterback in black and gold blowing a pink bubble, waits for the snap.

The reels themselves are straightforward. Three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left pay, in any row. Premiums are football memorabilia: trophy, champion ring, helmet, ball, then stopwatch, whistle, goal posts and penalty flag. Gold-rimmed A, K, Q and J handle small wins. The floodlight is the wild, on reels 2 to 6, and the golden ball is the scatter.

How yards are gained

No win0 (and a down is used)
Small win5

You start on your own 20, 80 yards out. Like real football, you have four downs to gain 10 yards. A 5-yard gain on first down leaves second and 5; another 5 resets you to first and 10. Fall short on fourth down and it's a turnover: the ball goes back to your 20. Reach the end zone and you score a touchdown, the drive resets, and Overtime begins.

A small detail we liked: the farther you are from a first down, the more a single big win matters, because 25 or 50 yards cover the distance in one play. It gives an ordinary win a second meaning.

Your drive belongs to your stake

This is the rule most players miss. The drive is saved separately for each bet level. If you're on the 10-yard line at one stake and switch to a higher one, you'll find that stake's own drive, probably near your 20. Come back to the original stake and the ball is still parked on the 10.

Three practical consequences. Jumping stakes because you're close at a lower one doesn't carry the ball over. Returning later, pick your old stake to resume. And if you alternate stakes, treat them as separate games running side by side. The game page doesn't say whether Gold Coin and Sweep Coin sessions share a drive at the same stake level; we couldn't confirm it, so assume they don't and check the drive panel when you switch.

Overtime, step by step

Kick-off. A touchdown gives 8 free spins. Golden balls give 8, 10, 12 or 15 for three, four, five or six of them (more than six still gives 15). If both happen on the same spin, four spins are added.

The ladder. The first free spin pays ×1. Every winning spin moves it up a step, to ×2, ×3, ×4, ×5, and it never comes down. Symbols also pay about one and a half times their paytable value in Overtime, before the ladder applies. Three or more golden balls add four spins, up to twenty in total.

The last second. The clock freezes at 0:01. Brutus drops back, and you pick a receiver: left, middle or right. The outcome is decided when the round starts, so the pick is just for fun. A catch multiplies the entire Overtime total by ×2, ×3, ×5, ×10 or ×25. A deflection keeps what you won. You never lose on the pass.

The total is capped at 5,000× the bet for the whole paid spin. On a 0.20 SC bet, that's 1,000 SC.

Buying Overtime for 62×

The Overtime button costs 62× the bet for 8 free spins and leaves your drive untouched, so you can buy and then return to your spot on the field. At 0.20 SC that's 12.40 SC a buy. We'd only do it if you enjoy the ladder and pass more than the build-up, and if several buys fit your balance. Otherwise, playing the drive at a lower stake reaches the same Overtime with more time in the game.

Gold Coins vs Sweep Coins, on game day

Same maths and features in either coin, one coin per session, no switching mid-round (Overtime included). Here's how we'd use them. Learn the drive on Gold Coins, where turnovers cost nothing that matters. Once you know how often you reach the end zone at a given stake, pick a Sweep Coin stake that lets you see a few full drives, a few hundred spins' worth. Football fans who also bet coins on real games can read our sports sweepstakes apps guide, and Best Slot Machines covers the operator side in sports sweepstakes explained.

Who should play Gridiron Noir

NFL fans first: downs, distance, turnovers and the frozen clock all behave the way you'd expect. Slot players who like a sense of progress beyond each payout. Less so anyone who just wants a quick, self-contained spin.
